On Your Mark...

The Mountain Mama is calling even louder now -- just two days away. If you're not ready now...

Meals are planned, half a suitcase of suppliments are packed, gear and more gear.

Safe and healthy travels, all.

Potential strategy for start: start late.

Last year, Kevin and I accidentally missed the start for our grouping by 15 minutes and left with the Valley riders. This virtually left us on the climbs and subsequent descents alone. This may have advantages on the mass start, especially on the first climb, which is literally right after the start.

I am not so much concerned about the first climb, but the first descent could get sketchy if crowded. I personally do not like descending big hills in a group...especially with people I have never cycled with. Most cyclist hold their line in a predictable fashion, but it only takes one split-second lapse in concentration and there's a pile up in the peleton.

This year's MM is full, so I would expect to see about 300-400 cyclists climbing that first hill together. The field should drastically spread out during and after the first climb.

Something to consider...

Safe travels guys.
